Preston Gaines: Archetypes of Nature

15 October - 12 November 2022
Overview
Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce ARCHETYPES OF NATURE, a solo exhibition by Houston-based artist Preston Gaines. This exhibition follows Gaines being awarded with CultuRunner's prestigious international The Future is Unwritten Artist Response Fund.

Creating an immersive experience, Gaines breathes life into a room by simulating the peace of being lost in the natural world. This exhibition invites viewers to slow down and become conscious of the beauty and significance of nature. Simply by observing the order, diversity, color, symmetry, and balance of nature’s substance, one can discover a sense of renewal.

Gaines is an artist and architect whose work with sculpture, projection, installation, and art objects encourages consideration of our collective experience and imagines radical possibilities for the future. With intention to reimagine and reestablish our connection to the archetypes of nature, art, and science, he marries these ideas to create emotionally healing spaces.

Personally feeling a deep affinity for geometry, plants, and the concept of harmonic resonance, Gaines speaks on the transformative power of art: “[It] serves in protecting our legacy, preserving our past, educating our city, and engaging our world…through a connection to nature. These interventions are not only important, but also necessary for…development in our community, especially at a time where many of us feel a sense of disconnect from one another.” Art and nature combine to form a restorative force that Gaines’s cascading and lush atmospheres seek to emulate. With stunning botanical visuals, Gaines transports his viewers beyond the sprawling city lights to a place of moving natural serenity.
