Stay Still. Smile! In this exhibition Anna Mavromatis explores the interlink between personal and social narratives. Mavromatis' intersection of history and her personal story is re-lived through the subtleties of printmaking where she has literally broken ground. During her quest to understand the past, Mavromatis acknowledges its role on her upbringing, a past that is marked by the turbulence of the twentieth century that has ultimately shaped her identity. Her paper-thin dresses with their words are a constant reminder to every single female viewer about their parental dictates as young girls, the "do's and don'ts" that were purposely put on due to gender. Even if the subject is so profound, there is a softness and transparency to her work. Her monotype dresses on paper allow us to re-think about the idea of fragility —revealing how we are complex, layered creatures that might just get smarter with each shedding.
