Nancy O'Connor | Out of the Darkness and Into the Marvelous December 1 - December 28, 2017

Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Out of the Darkness & Into the Marvelous, a solo-exhibition by Houston artist Nancy O'Connor, opening Friday, December 1, 2017, with an artist’s reception from 6:30-8:30PM. Out of the Darkness & Into the Marvelous, includes photography, tableau within a vitrine, sculpture, engraved glass, sound, film and video projection.

Nancy O'Connor was born in 1957 in Victoria, Texas. In 1975, she studied filmmaking and music at Trinity University in San Antonio and received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas in Austin. She has lived in San Francisco, New York and currently resides in Houston.

The inspiration of this exhibition was Milam’s Journey, 1984. The upcoming exhibition, Out of the Darkness and Into the Marvelous, reached a metamorphosis and has entered a new plateau. In addition, there will be sound via an audio headset located on a beautiful bench playing a recorded loop of Milam talking about love.

Nancy O’Connor met Milam Thompson, an African American ranch cook and cowboy when she was 14 years old, living on her family's sprawling land. He was known most in his community as strange and isolated. However, for Nancy O'Connor, he was the voice of a time in nature before industry or technology. His stories about the culture and community in which he lived, revealed a man whose wisdom is timeless and whose questions about life, compassion, God and consciousness are as moving, present and powerful today as they were when she first heard them over 45 years ago.

Past exhibitions include a solo show at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Corpus Christi Museum, Corpus Christi; Alternative Museum, New York; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, Washington; Blaffer Gallery, Houston; and Guannzhou Museum, China; Houston Center for Photography, Houston.
