Andrea Bianconi, born in Arzignano, Italy in 1974, is a versatile artist whose practice spans across various mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, video performance, and public performance. Currently, he divides his time between New York and Vicenza. Bianconi's work often explores the intersections of communication, identity, and the human experience, frequently engaging with the public in interactive and performative ways.
Bianconi has participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions worldwide. Notably, he was selected for the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, curated by Catherine de Zegher. His recent exhibitions include Solstice - Dialogic Drawing Experiment at the MSK Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. His work has also been featured in solo and group exhibitions at prominent venues such as the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C.; Museu do Meio Ambiente in Rio de Janeiro; Centro del Carmen in Valencia, Spain; Matadero in Madrid, Spain; Film Society Lincoln Center in New York; Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel, Switzerland; Kunsthal Charlottenburg in Copenhagen, Denmark; ISCP in Brooklyn, New York; Palazzo Reale in Milan, Italy; Furini Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Italy; Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston, Texas; and Volta Show in New York.
Bianconi's performances are a significant aspect of his practice, often taking place in public spaces and engaging with audiences directly. A retrospective of his performance work from 2006 to 2016 was recently published by Silvana Editoriale, coinciding with an exhibition at Casa Testori in Milan. Some of his notable performances include Fantastic Planet at Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston, Texas; Time is Timing at Dolomites National Park in Italy; Summer Night Series at Union Square in New York City; performances at the Italian Cultural Institute in NYC; Tina B – The Prague Contemporary Art Festival in Prague, Czech Republic; Postcard People at the Peekskill Project V at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) in New York; and The Chinese Umbrella Hat Project, which took place in both Shanghai, China, as a collateral event of Expo 2010, and in Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy, as a collateral event of the 54th Venice Biennial in 2011.
Bianconi's work has been widely recognized and reviewed in leading art journals and mainstream publications such as Vogue, Artforum, Interni, Flash Art, La Repubblica, Il Sole 24 Ore, Double Magazine, El Mundo, Beijing Times, and Shanghai Daily. His first monograph was published by Charta in 2011, followed by the artist book ROMANCE in 2012, launched at MoMA PS1 in New York. In 2013, his book FABLE was also launched at MoMA PS1. Additionally, he created the cover for Connectivity 2013, published by the New York Public Library in NYC.
